Abstract

The study is aimed at analyzing the interpreting techniques used by tour guide in rendering the meaning of the source language utterances (SL) into Target Language (TL). The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The primary data were taken from the original recorded data in the mode of consecutive interpreting at the ancient tomb of Raja Sidabutar in Tomok village. The data were collected by participant observation, depth interviews, literature study and documents. The result shows that there are three main techniques applied by the interpreter of the total techniques of interpreting namely; Reformulation (3.70%) Summarizing and Recapitulation (70.37%), Specification (7.40%), Omission (3.70%). There are three combinations of existing techniques namely; Explanation and Summarizing or Recapitulation technique (3.70%), Summarizing and Specification technique (3.70%), and Reformulation and Summarizing or Recapitulation techniques (3.70%). The most dominant techniques which is frequently used by the interpreter is Summarizing and Recapitulation technique (70.30%).
