The development of an economy largely depends on the availability as well as optimum utilization of resources and on the efficient functioning of various sectors in the economy. Of all the sectors, banking sector has a very vital role to play. A sound banking system mobilizes the small and scattered savings of the community and makes them available for investment for productive purposes. It leads to capital formation innovation and growth. However the menace of NPAs has increased to a gigantic proportion and India is ranked 5th in terms of bad loans in the world. Therefore it becomes imperative to continuously measure the performance of the banks and CAMELS approach is one of the widely used methods to measure the performance of the bank.
